# What Happens When Consumer Has a Credit Freeze

If a consumer has placed a freeze with a credit bureau, their application process will stop until
the freeze has been lifted. The consumer is shown the name of the credit bureau and the contact
details and web address needed to resolve it. Once the freeze is lifted, the application can be
reprocessed.

**Only the consumer can lift a freeze.** Neither you nor UAS can do it for them.

The menu prompt is worth passing on. Consumers who cannot find the option tend to hang up and
abandon the application, which then expires 30 days after they applied.

covers freezes, disputes and updating personal information in one place.

<Info>
  A freeze can be lifted **temporarily** — it does not have to be removed permanently, and lifting
  it is free.
